First time pet owners

Every time you walk by the puppy store window, your mind wanders.  You see yourself, your family, and that cute little dog playing at the park or watching television together.  Oh, you can’t wait to get a dog!  But, before you rush into the store and grab the first pup you see, you may want to consider the reality of having a dog.  They are great companions, but require a lot of energy from you and your family.

Dogs need time!  A puppy, just like a small child, requires lots of time.  From the second you bring him home, he will need your help.  You will have to housetrain him, socialize him with other pets, socialize him with small children and teach him the do’s and don’ts of your home.  If you are already very busy and hardly have time for yourself, then you may want to postpone getting a puppy.

Dogs need attention!  If he starts chewing on your favorite shoe, then you may not be giving him enough attention.  Dogs thrive on pleasing their owners.  They are not happy if they are left alone for longs periods of time.  If you do not give them enough positive attention, then they may resort to misbehavior, because that is a way to for them to be noticed.  When training, you must always be positive.  Be willing to give your dog treats when he does something good, but do not punish him for tearing up your shoe while you were at work.  He will not remember what he did to deserve the punishment, rendering the punishment ineffective.  It is a good idea to have a variety of toys for your pup.  Toys can keep him occupied when you are away from the home.

Dogs need care!  Dogs can not get their own food, water, or even brush themselves.  You have to spend time feeding and grooming them.  You have to make sure they are free of fleas and ticks.  Many breeds need regular bathing.  They require professional care, such as vaccinations and being spayed or neutered.  Other health problems may arise, and you have to make sure they get the care they need.  Often, trips to the veterinarian can be expensive.  Your dog is an investment that will last for many years.  Make sure you can afford taking care of a dog before you stop by the puppy store.

Dogs need exercise!  Depending on the breed, some dogs are more active than others.  Many are happy with spending their entire lives inside your homes, while others prefer the outdoors.  No matter the situation, all dogs need exercise.  Certain breeds require daily runs or high-intense workouts.  All breeds benefit from daily walks.  It is a way for them to let go of energy and remain healthy, active pets.  Laziness can lead to obesity, which in turn leads to other health problems.

Don’t forget the family needs!  If someone in your house is allergic to animal dander, then you may be limited to what breed of dog you can get.  If you have children, then you need to take the pet’s temperament into consideration.  Many dogs love the companionship of children, but others are easily irritated by a screaming child.  If you have other pets in the home, then you also need to be breed specific.  If socialized correctly, most dogs will enjoy the company of other animals.  Some, however, are naturally territorial and will not abide well with other household pets.  Dogs can also be loud and constant barkers. You and your family must be prepared for a barking dog.  You can not get angry with him.  There are quieter dogs out there.  So, if you need a quiet dog, then make sure you do research on the breed.

Dogs can be wonderful additions to your home, but you must be able to provide them with proper care.  If you are super busy and live on a tight schedule or budget, then a dog may not be a good idea at this point.  Puppies are like children, and need constant care and attention.  Throughout their lives they require professional care that can be costly.  When considering getting a dog, do not forget the needs of your family.  You should choose a breed that fits your lifestyle.  If someone in your home has bad allergies, then consider a hairless breed or one that does not shed often.  Also take the dog’s temperament into consideration if you have small children.  Do your research, and enjoy your new companion!
